Benefits at a Glance

As part of its total compensation package, the City of Leduc is proud to offer a comprehensive group benefits plan to eligible employees. Career postings and formal offer letters provided to successful candidates will identify if a current opportunity is eligible (or required) to participate in the benefits plan. Group benefits premiums are cost shared between the employee and the City of Leduc.  A brief summary as well as detailed group benefits plan booklets are provided below.

Group Benefits Plan

At present, the group benefits plan providers include Alberta Blue Cross and Desjardins Insurance. The group benefits plan includes extended health and dental coverage and a variety of types of insurance.  All are outlined below.

Extended Health and Dental Benefits
Extended health benefits provide protection against the cost of medical services and treatments not covered by the province’s health care plan.  The City’s group benefit plan includes, but is not limited to, the following extended health benefits:

  • Prescription drugs
  • Hospital accommodations (e.g., private rooms, semi-private rooms)
  • Paramedical practitioners
  • Out of province emergency travel
  • Vision care
  • Second opinion

The plan also includes the following dental benefits:

  • Basic dental
  • Periodontic
  • Extensive
  • Orthodontic

Life Insurance
Life insurance provides financial security for the people who depend on you. Your beneficiaries will receive a lump-sum payment if you pass away while insured by this plan*. The plan also provides optional spousal life insurance.

*There are certain conditions where this insurance is not payable.

Accidental Death and Dismemberment Insurance
Accidental death and dismemberment insurance provides payment to you or your beneficiaries if you are dismembered or die in an accident*.

*There are certain conditions where this insurance is not payable.

Critical Illness Coverage
Critical illness coverage offers financial help to pay the costs associated with life-altering illnesses. A benefit is paid if someone insured by the plan is diagnosed with a covered critical illness (conditions may apply). This is an optional addition to the group benefits plan and spousal coverage is also available.

Optional Insurances
Employees and their spouses who are eligible can opt in on optional life insurance and critical illness coverages above and beyond what is provided in the standard benefit plan (subject to approval by the insurer).

Health Spending and Wellness Spending Accounts**
Annually, the City offers eligible employees a specific dollar amount that can be credited to a health spending and/or a wellness spending account. The employee chooses whether they want the amount to go to health spending, wellness spending, or a combination of the two accounts.

The health spending account complements the group benefits plan. Employees can use their credits to pay for eligible medical and dental expenses not covered by the group plan or provincial health care. Claims made to the health spending account are non-taxable.

The wellness spending account supports an employee’s holistic health and wellness.  Employees can use their credits to pay for services in the following areas: physical health, mental health, emotional health, career development, personal wellness and quality of life. In practice, this can include items ranging from fitness equipment and activities to family and pet care (and more!). Claims made to the wellness spending account are a taxable benefit.

**The health spending account and wellness spending accounts do not apply to IAFF employees.
