City council endorses new report on key societal challenges

Tuesday, March 22, 2022

Leduc’s Homelessness Prevention and Poverty Framework identifies short-, mid- and long-term strategies to guide the implementation of initiatives for a number of priority areas in how this city’s vulnerable population can be better supported.

“Our community is not alone in facing these challenges and how we choose to move forward with this new framework will set the tone in how we put these words into actions,” says Leduc Mayor Bob Young.

The framework shares key priorities:

  • Access to housing
  • Improve access to services
  • Mental health and addiction
  • Food security

“Homelessness and poverty impact all communities, big and small, and can be seen in all populations and demographics. In order to support our vulnerable population, it means we need to start looking at these challenges through a new lens and recognize the opportunities, not hurdles, to give people a hand up instead of a handout,” says Young.

Framework development included public engagement, gathering input from municipal partners, service agencies, and residents with grounded expertise providing a better understanding of the issues facing those who are experiencing homelessness and at risk of homelessness within the City of Leduc.
