2024: A year of progress, collaboration and success

Guided by our Strategic Plan, our teams worked diligently with community and regional partners to meet the evolving needs of residents, deliver exceptional programs and services and enhance the quality of life in Leduc.

The following is a sample of programs and services delivered in 2024.

• Leduc Transit celebrated its one millionth ride and expanded its local on-demand services to allow for more access between the City of Leduc and Nisku Business Park.
• The Animal Control and Licensing Bylaw was updated to enhance public safety during situations in which a dog may endanger the public.
• A new seasonal, temporary off-leash dog park opened in Deer Valley Gardens between May and October 2024 and will continue in 2025 with an expanded site size and benches.
• Support for the vulnerable population in Leduc was enhanced.
• The Traffic Bylaw was updated to support quality of life for all residents in the community by applying maximum noise limits to the exhaust of all vehicles.

• Capital projects including major roadworks, infrastructure upgrades, and public space improvements were successfully completed.
• Input on the development of a housing strategy (expected to be finalized in 2025) was received to help us build a more inclusive and resilient housing landscape where everyone has access to safe, affordable and suitable housing options.
• A recommitment was made to environmental stewardship with approval of the new Environmental Plan, which will guide the City’s environmental actions for the next ten years.
• The new Urban Centre Area Redevelopment Plan development continued with community public engagement, which will help to guide redevelopment and new investments in Leduc’s Urban Centre.
• A one-year pilot began on the use of a Road Weather Information Station that supports the City’s road maintenance response and enhances safety for motorists.
• The City is negotiating a land sale agreement with TLA Group of Holding Companies, following a negotiated request for proposals that was issued earlier this year to help us explore opportunities to address housing needs in Leduc.
• Key updates were made to the Municipal Development Plan to allow Leduc to grow and develop residential land in areas previously restricted by the Airport Vicinity Protection Area (AVPA) regulations.

• Results from the business retention and expansion survey show the local business community believe the city is an economically prosperous place to build a business.
• The new Leading Edge Physiotherapy Pickleball Facility in Leduc officially opened for play in May and is poised to attract new sporting opportunities previously inaccessible in the community.
• Input was provided by elected officials, industry leaders, developers, regional partners and residents through public engagement sessions this year about their top economic development priorities, to help guide the development of an economic development strategy.
• Of the $83 million budgeted on the 65 Avenue and QEII Interchange project, $52 million was spent this year. A major milestone was reached with the completion of the bridge deck.

• Chief administrative officers from municipalities in the Edmonton Metro Region have signed a Memorandum of Understanding for a new, collaborative framework intended to improve regional transit services.
• An inclusive playground at Willow Park School was built, with additional inclusive playground features made possible through funding that was secured through a partnership with the Kinsmen Club of Leduc.
• Truth and reconciliation work continued by partnering with local community groups to recognize the five key dates of our Treaty, Truth and ReconciliACTION plan.
• Residents, industry and community partners were engaged on how they imagine urban agriculture in Leduc. Their input will guide the development of an Urban Agriculture Plan (UAP), which is a requirement set by the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board’s Regional Agricultural Master Plan.
• An additional School Resource Officer (SRO) dedicated to Leduc’s elementary schools started in fall 2024, as a result of a partnership between the City, Black Gold School Division and St. Thomas Aquinas Roman Catholic School Division.
• Thanks to an innovative partnership between YEG, Drone Delivery Canada (DDC) (with the assistance of their sales agent, Air Canada), Apple Express, Braden Burry Expediting (bbe), Montana First Nation, the City of Leduc and Leduc County, YEG’s newest commercial drone will be able to transport first- and final-mile time-sensitive products more effectively.
