All businesses, including home-based and temporary businesses, require a licence to operate legally within Leduc.
Application Process
- Applications are submitted through Leduc’s CityView portal and require details like business information, proof of registration, and further documents, depending on your business type.
- Fees depend on the type of business (e.g., general commercial, home-based, non-resident and mobile) and are billed annually.
- Licences need annual renewal. Reminders are issued, but businesses must renew promptly to avoid penalties.
Processing times vary, so applicants should apply well in advance of their intended start date. Businesses operating without a licence may face fines or other penalties.
Business Licence Fees
Fees for business licences are outlined in the Fees & Charges Bylaw. For new businesses located in Leduc, your fee will be based on the portion of the year remaining when you apply for your licence.
For Non-Resident Businesses, when you apply for a business licence after August 31, the fee for the rest of the year will be 50% of the annual fee.

How to Purchase a Business Licence

Seasonal Outdoor Patios
Businesses who wish to set up a seasonal outdoor patio on public property from April 15 to October 15 are required to complete an application for a Licence of Occupation. Applicants are encouraged to schedule a pre-application meeting with our Planning and Economic Development team to learn more about the requirements. Previously offered in the downtown core only, the patio program has been broadened to allow businesses anywhere in Leduc to participate and will be offered on an annual basis moving forward.

Patio Application Requirements
- A detailed site plan of the patio, including dimensions, seating, and barriers, and how it will integrate with nearby traffic and pedestrian flow by addressing pedestrian safety and maintaining accessibility standards.
- Proof of adequate insurance is mandatory to cover liability for the outdoor space.
- Patios should not obstruct pedestrian pathways, should be well-maintained, and comply with any federal, provincial, or municipal legislation, including, but not limited to, Alberta Health Services and AGLC requirements.
Taxi Operation and Vehicle Permits
A taxi operation permit is required for taxi businesses with a minimum of three licensed vehicles and a 24/7 dispatch service. Operators need to provide company details, including a Provincial registration document, current fares/rates, and a completed Taxi Statutory Declaration. Annual renewal is mandatory, and vehicle inspections are required to maintain valid operation status.

Taxi Vehicle Permit
- Each taxi needs an individual permit to operate, which includes displaying rate cards, company identification, and driver credentials within the vehicle.
- To receive a vehicle permit, each taxi must submit valid registration, insurance, and recent mechanical inspection certificates.
Taxis are subject to City inspections for vehicle quality and rate regulation adherence. Non-compliance can lead to suspension or revocation of permits.
