Maximum noise limits now apply to all vehicles in Leduc
All motor vehicles in Leduc must now adhere to a maximum limit of 92 decibels at idle and 96 decibels at any speed above idle for exhaust noise, to support quality of life for all residents in the community.
Previously, the City of Leduc's Traffic Bylaw noise limits applied only to motorcycles. The bylaw amendments approved on July 8, 2024, establish a standard maximum decibel level for all motor vehicles. Exceeding this maximum may result in a penalty of $250.
We have heard from residents that excessive vehicle noise is a recurring issue throughout the city. Some noise is related to traffic volume; however, a portion also relates to modified exhaust systems.
Vehicle owners should:
- Repair modified exhaust systems
- Avoid altering factory-issued parts on vehicles that increase sound
- Ensure their vehicle complies with the Traffic Safety Act, which also lays out traffic-related charges and penalties
In partnership with the Leduc RCMP, Leduc Enforcement Services has addressed noise pollution from vehicles with modified and/or excessively loud exhaust systems through Project REV'N since 2022. As part of this program, motorists may meet officers out in the community testing the decibel levels of vehicles to help ensure Leduc is a safe, healthy and comfortable community for everyone.
