City of Leduc recommits to ReconciliACTION

Tuesday, October 1, 2024

On Oct. 1 each year, the City of Leduc pauses to reflect on the meaning and learnings from Sept. 30, and recommits to the process of reconciliACTION.

This recognition date is specific to Leduc and provides a chance to review the City's recent efforts to address Truth and Reconciliation, and to further identify the City's path forward.

"As we reflect on our second year through the 12-month cycle of Treaty, Truth and ReconciliACTION, I am grateful to have seen so many join us in finding intentional ways to pause, listen and learn," says City of Leduc Mayor Bob Young. "In the year ahead, we will continue to engage with the community on our path towards truth and reconciliation."

Since October 2023, the City has taken the following steps to connect, listen and learn:

  • Hosted three Indigenous Series performances at Maclab Centre:
  • Hosted the Indigenous Peoples' Day Community Gathering and Good Neighbours BBQ
  • Encouraged participation in the Leduc Public Library's Invitation to Indigenous Reading during Indigenous History Month
  • Coordinated a faciliated Wampum Belt Teachings workshop for residents (although wampum belts were not part of Treaty 6, they have been historically significant in other treaty negotiations, highlighting an Indigenous understanding of Treaties)
  • Supported Creating Hope Society's 'Calling Back Our Spirit' gathering events on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation
  • Participated in an Indigenous Relations Community of Practice Meeting with the Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board
  • Supported the Leduc Public Library Board during their Land Acknowledgement training session
  • Helped connect community organizations with Indigenous resources, fostering meaningful partnerships and promoting collaboration to support shared goals

Residents in the community are encouraged to make a personal recommitment to reconciliation.
