Leduc City Council votes to join new Regional Transit Services Commission

Tuesday, February 25, 2020

On Monday, February 24, 2020, Leduc City Council voted to participate in establishing a new Regional Transit Services Commission (RTSC).

The primary goal for the RTSC Program is to create a unified transit service for the Edmonton Metropolitan Region that delivers efficient and affordable mobility options to all citizens and improves the movement of people across our rapidly growing region.

“We are committed to forward-thinking solutions to improve mobility and transportation options within the region, and, ultimately, the quality of life for our residents,” says Leduc Mayor Bob Young. For us, joining the RTSC is about being at the table where regional decisions are being made, finding efficiencies and working collaboratively with our partners.”

Thirteen municipalities in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region have been exploring the possibility of creating a Regional Transit Services Commission (RTSC). The 13 municipalities include Beaumont, Devon, Edmonton, Fort Saskatchewan, Leduc, Leduc County, Morinville, Parkland County, St. Albert, Spruce Grove, Strathcona County, Stony Plain, and Sturgeon County.

In January, the RTSC Transition Team released their report: “Accelerating Transit in the Edmonton Metropolitan Region: Building a Regional Transit Services Commission.” The business case highlighted opportunities for a more efficient and improved regional transit service, with projected savings of 850 service hours per week and $3.4 million per year once systems are fully aligned in 2026.

All 13 municipalities will vote throughout February and March on whether to join the RTSC. Next steps will be confirmed by the participating members of the RTSC Transition Team once the voting process for all regional municipalities is complete. It is anticipated that, once voting is complete, participating municipalities would prepare and submit an application to the Government of Alberta to create the Commission, with Commission operations commencing in 2022 at the earliest.
