Mayor Young issues special statement
On behalf of Leduc City Council and Administration, Mayor Bob Young has issued the following statement regarding Canada Day and the tragedy regarding the continued uncovering of unmarked graves at former residential school sites across Canada:
“The uncovered bodies of Indigenous children at former residential school sites across the country is tragic - we mourn their loss and echo the need for continued efforts at reconciliation. While we are proceeding with Canada Day activities that we have planned with neighbouring municipalities, we will also be pausing for a moment of silence at 2:15 p.m., to pay respect to the 215 Indigenous lives identified in Kamloops, as well as those since and yet to be uncovered. Canada Day is an opportunity to reflect, to acknowledge our flaws and the changes needed, and to celebrate the shared values of inclusivity, peace, multiculturalism and kindness that we all strive for.”
In addition to joining the moment of silence at 2:15 p.m. on July 1, residents could also consider some of the following actions to mourn the tragedy and honour Indigenous culture:
- Wear an orange shirt
- Plant a tree on in your yard in memory of those lost and impacted
- Learn more about how to support Truth and Reconciliation efforts
