Residents support the Deer Valley off-leash dog park

Wednesday, December 11, 2024

After gathering feedback from Leduc residents, 86 per cent of survey respondents supported Deer Valley off-leash dog park becoming a permanent amenity in the community.

The off-leash dog park operated as a pilot project at Deer Valley and was fully enclosed for the safety of other dogs and dog owners. It featured double gate entrances, waste receptacles and signage, and was open to the public from May through September.

During this time 232 residents submitted their feedback about the park through an online survey. The feedback primarily highlighted a need for expanding the space, and incorporating additional amenities, such as benches and trees, to enhance both comfort and aesthetic appeal of the site.

Survey data:

Would you support the temporary off-leash dog park becoming a permanent site that operates each year from May through September?

  • 86 per cent of respondents support or strongly support the Deer Valley off-leash dog park becoming a permanent amenity in Leduc.
  • 5 per cent of respondents were neutral as to whether the Deer Valley off-leash dog park should become a permanent amenity in Leduc.
  • 8 per cent of respondents do not support, or strongly do not support, the Deer Valley off-leash dog park becoming a permanent amenity in Leduc.

With this feedback in mind, City Council directed Administration to operate the Deer Valley off-leash dog park pilot project for another season with increased play space and added benches for comfort.

Additional public input will be collected in 2025 about the temporary amenity to help determine if the site will become permanent in Leduc.
