Statement from Mayor Young: Oil price differential announcement from Premier Notley

Sunday, December 2, 2018

City of Leduc Mayor, Bob Young, issued the following statement in response to Premier Rachel Notley’s announcement this evening.

“This is a very important issue for not only Albertans, but Canadians as well. To know that this oil price differential is costing our economy more than $80 million a day – money that could be used to support key infrastructure initiatives like roads, schools and hospitals – is very concerning.

Many companies in our Leduc and Nisku Business Parks have strong ties to the oil and gas industry and, as a result, are significantly impacted by this situation. After already weathering the recent economic downturn, these companies, along with Leduc City Council, have been very hopeful with the signs of recovery that were beginning to show this year. To see instability return to the economy once again, creates apprehension for these businesses and the City of Leduc.

We are very supportive of the steps that the Government of Alberta has announced this evening, which will help return stability to our economy. The Government plays a vital role in ensuring that this situation is corrected and I have every confidence that the Government of Alberta is taking the right actions needed to do that. It is now time for the Federal Government to do the same and show their support for Albertans."
