Vehicle equipment checkstops focused on safety

Leduc Enforcement Services (LES) Municipal Traffic Unit with the support of Leduc RCMP conducted two vehicle equipment checkstops in the City of Leduc on October 8 and 17, 2020. The stops were completed on 50 Avenue (between Grant MacEwan Blvd and Alton Drive) and on Black Gold Drive (in front of the Leduc Recreation Centre). The results from both these two-hour checkstops found 86 vehicles in non-compliance, in which a majority of motorists received warnings. The prevalent vehicles found in violation of the Traffic Safety Act were for altered window tints, loud exhausts, lack of mud flaps and cracked windshields.

“With winter around the corner, having a properly maintained vehicle prepares you for the changing road conditions,” says John Prokopiw, Community Peace Officer (CPO). “We want to remind and educate motorists of their responsibility as an operator and how you demonstrate respect for others with a safe vehicle because an unsafe one puts everyone at risk.”

As motorists transition their vehicles for winter conditions, this is a good time to do check that equipment is functioning correctly. Most of what was inspected are items people can do easily at home, such as checking your lights, ensuring your registration and insurance is up to date, checking the tread on your tires, etc. While the primary purpose was to ensure vehicles were meeting safety standards, the stops caught additional serious offences including a suspended driver and learner driver without supervision.

 “We all have a duty in helping to keep each other safe even with regulations in place. During our checkstops, two drivers made poor decisions and we are glad that that we were able to get them off the road to help keep motorists safe,” says CPO John Prokopiw.
