City of Leduc thrives as residents applaud quality of life and municipal services

The City of Leduc unveiled the findings of its biannual citizen satisfaction survey today, demonstrating a resounding vote of confidence in the community's quality of life and city services. The results underscored Leduc's reputation as a place with an excellent quality of life. 

For the fourth consecutive year, Leduc residents have affirmed their contentment with life in the city. A solid 73% of respondents, in a survey that has consistently yielded similar results since 2015, rated the overall quality of life as excellent or very good. Key contributors to this high quality of life include good municipal services, the parks and multi-way path system, and the fact that the city has all the amenities needed.  

Derek Prohar, City Manager, remarked, "It is encouraging to see the favourable assessment of quality and continued satisfaction of Leduc's residents with municipal services. I am immensely proud of the diligent efforts of our city employees in maintaining the quality of services we offer." 

A significant majority of citizens, 72%, expressed satisfaction with city programs and services. Notably, residents identified recreation facilities, waste collection and diversion, fire response services, and outdoor recreational amenities as the top services provided by the City. 

The survey also showed areas where improvements are desired. Respondents called for more frequent and better-quality communication from the city. Satisfaction with recreation facilities and the Leduc Recreation Centre showed a decline from 32% in 2015 to 23% in 2023. Additionally, citizens voiced concerns about rising crime rates, limited support for individuals experiencing homelessness, and the rising cost of living. 

Mayor Young stated, "These concerns are shared by Leduc City Council. Crime concerns are not uncommon in a growing city, and we are collaborating closely with the RCMP and our Peace Officers to develop effective crime reduction strategies. Regrettably, homelessness and the high cost of living are challenges faced by communities nationwide. Here in Leduc, we continue to partner with the Province and the Federal Government to expedite affordable housing initiatives." 

Regarding priorities, Leduc citizens identified maintaining infrastructure and roads and ensuring low taxes as their foremost civic concerns. 

The survey, conducted from June 1 to June 24, 2023, encompassed interviews with 403 Leduc citizens aged 18 years and older. The sample selection and weighting ensured a statistically valid representation of the Leduc population, with a margin of error of +/- 4.9%, 19 times out of 20.
