Leduc’s 2024 Budget Honoured with North American Award for the Eighth Consecutive Year
The City of Leduc recently received a Distinguished Budget Presentation Award for the 2024 Budget Binder, recognizing it meets the highest standards for planning, transparency, communication and policy. This is the eighth consecutive year the City has received this award, which demonstrates the City has achieved ‘proficient’ status across four categories and exemplifies nationally recognized guidelines and best practices for budgeting.
Administered by the Government Finance Officers Association of the United States and Canada (GFOA), the prestigious North American award evaluates how well the municipal budget plan serves as a policy document, a financial plan, an operations guide, and a communications tool. The 2024 binder also received special recognition by the GFOA for its strategic focus – a first-time honour for the City – by achieving an ‘outstanding’ score by all three reviewers for the ‘Strategic Goals and Strategies’ section.
“We take our responsibility to develop and manage the City’s budget very seriously, and receiving this award year over year demonstrates that we’re on the right track,” says City of Leduc Mayor Bob Young. “This award reflects our commitment to meet the highest principles of public budgeting and is a testament to the City’s dedication to sound financial management, accountability to the community, and commitment to sustainable governance.”
"Developing and managing a municipal budget is a complex, iterative process. Our Finance team, in collaboration with City colleagues and under the direction of Leduc City Council, does an exceptional job of pulling all the pieces together and making it make sense,” says City Manager Derek Prohar. “This is the highest form of recognition in governmental budgeting, and it wouldn’t be possible for us to achieve this honour each year without the strong partnership and collaboration that exists between City Administration and Leduc City Council.”
The GFOA advances excellence in government finance by providing best practices, professional development, resources and practical research for more than 22,500 members and the communities they serve. There are over 1,700 participants in the GFOA’s Budget Awards program.
