Bike safe, share the trail

Thursday, July 11, 2024

This summer, the City of Leduc is emphasizing the importance of bike safety and multiway etiquette to keep our community's trails safe and enjoyable for everyone to use.

Community Peace Officers will be out on the trails to engage with the community throughout the summer. Trail users are encouraged to say hello and chat about bike safety equipment, safe riding tips and general multiway etiquette.

Cyclists are reminded to:

  • Wear a helmet: Helmets save lives. They are the most effective way to prevent head injuries in case of an accident. Make sure it fits properly and sits snugly on your head without tilting forward or backward.
  • Be visible: Enhance your visibility to motorists, other cyclists and pedestrians by wearing bright, reflective clothing. Equip your bike with front and rear lights, especially if you're riding at dawn, dusk or night.
  • Stay alert: Stay focused and avoid distractions. Keep an eye out for obstacles, pedestrians and other trail users. Exercise caution to avoid collisions, especially when entering or exiting the trail onto a roadway or approaching a blind spot, corner or hill.
  • Maintain your bicycle: Equip your bike with a bell. Regularly inspect the brakes, tires, chain and gears. A well-maintained bicycle is less likely to have mechanical failures that could lead to accidents.
  • Ride predictably; ring your bell: Avoid sudden swerves or changes in direction. Keep to the right and yield the right-of-way to slower moving pedestrian traffic. Ring your bell to notify slower trail users that you are approaching and intend to pass. Pass on the left.
  • Speed smart: Adjust to the conditions and travel at a speed that is reasonable considering weather and traffic volume.

Pedestrians are reminded to:

  • Move aside: When you hear a bell ring, a cyclist may be approaching from behind and is signaling their intention to pass you. Move to the right so they can pass on the left.
  • Practice responsible pet ownership: To keep our trails safe and clean for all - including pets - all pet owners are required to clean up after their pets immediately and keep pets on a leash that is no more than 2 metres long.
