It starts with a strange gurgling noise. No worries, you keep flushing those “flushable” baby wipes down the toilet. The next morning, water spills onto the floor and your shower isn’t draining. Need to use the toilet? That's too bad, you’ve got a nasty clog. All of this happened because someone put some no-no's down the drain, and now you're in for a hefty repair bill.

What have you learned? Just because it goes down, doesn’t mean it should. The only things that should be flushed are the three Ps: pee, poo and toilet paper.

In recognition of Septic Awareness Week (Sept. 16–20), the City of Leduc encourages residents to be a Clog Stopper. Clogged pipes can cause expensive repairs, environmental damage and service outages.

Items that should never be flushed or poured down the drain:

  • Wet wipes (even if they say "flushable")
  • Tampons
  • Food scraps
  • Oil and grease
  • Cat litter
  • Cigarettes
  • Cotton balls and swabs

The Clog Stoppers campaign is a team effort between ARROW Utilities, the City of Leduc and other nearby municipalities. The goal is to teach people what can and can’t go down our drains, and how bad it can be for our sewer systems if we don’t follow the rules. The tongue-in-cheek campaign aims to help people understand the serious effects of clogged pipes.
