Changes to legislated advertising requirements coming for City of Leduc

Council approved a new Advertising Bylaw to support the advertising of statutory notices as required by the Municipal Government Act, at the November 25 regular Council Meeting. The Bylaw focuses on keeping residents informed in a timely and effective manner through digital means starting Feb. 1, 2025. 

The new Bylaw requires notices to be posted on the City’s website at least 14 days in advance of the applicable date and removes the requirement to advertise five days in advance in a newspaper. This change brings the City in alignment with surrounding municipalities and their advertising requirements.   

“We have heard from the community that the City’s website and social media pages are the top ways people get City news,” says City of Leduc Mayor Bob Young. “The new Bylaw is to keep up with the evolving ways that residents get information – now more digital than ever.” 

Before changes come into effect, the city will conduct an information campaign using traditional media advertising, social media, the City’s webpage and direct mail to all households. The focus will be on the bylaw changes but will also provide clarity on how to participate in the public hearing process.  

Statutory notices can be about bylaw, resolution, meeting, public hearing, or other items required by any provincial legislation.
