Community calls for economic diversity and strategic growth

Diversifying the economy and strategically developing key sectors are top economic development priorities for the community in the City of Leduc. These key themes emerged from recent public engagement sessions held in September 2024, which invited input from elected officials, industry leaders, developers, regional partners and residents.   

“We heard loud and clear that Leduc has the opportunity to build on its unique strengths and continue to be a destination for businesses. We also have an opportunity to attract skilled employees to support our growing business community.” said Tara de Munnik, Manager of Economic Development in the City of Leduc. “This feedback will help shape our upcoming economic development efforts, ensuring it reflects the community’s vision.”   

In total, 58 participants provided input, emphasizing a desire to: 

• Strengthen and expand industries to ensure a resilient and robust local economy.   
• Differentiate Leduc while taking advantage of its proximity to Edmonton.   
• Showcase Leduc’s unique assets and advantages to attract and grow businesses.   
• Further build what contributes to quality of life (e.g., cultural and recreational opportunities while focusing on complete communities). 
• Align workforce skills with the needs of employers in emerging sectors.   
• Encourage a mix of higher-density, higher-value, and affordable rental housing options to meet diverse needs.   

This feedback will guide the development of the city’s economic development strategy, set to be completed in the first quarter of 2025. The strategy will outline actionable steps to position Leduc as a regional leader in economic growth, workforce readiness, and community vitality.
