Growing Urban Agriculture in Leduc

The City of Leduc’s draft Urban Agriculture Plan (UAP), shared with City Council on Jan. 20, lays out a roadmap to strengthen local food systems and support urban agriculture. The plan also aligns with the Regional Agriculture Master Plan (RAMP) requirements to promote agricultural growth and diversification across the region.  

The plan’s four guiding principles with supporting actions are:   

1. Strengthening the local food economy.  
2. Increasing food accessibility and affordability.  
3. Promoting community health and wellbeing.  
4. Enhancing education and skill development. 

“Urban agriculture is not only about growing food — it is about growing connections, skills, and opportunities that make our community stronger,” says Teaka Broughm, City of Leduc Director of Planning and Economic Development. “We envision a collaborative effort with residents, local businesses, community organizations, and the City to implement urban agriculture initiatives.”   

Three key highlights from the plan include:   

1. Establishing an urban agriculture champion in the City to lead urban agriculture initiatives, track progress, and foster community connections.   
2. Building capacity for participation in urban agriculture activities by addressing barriers and providing education and resources to enable broader engagement.  
3. Supporting value-added agriculture and agribusiness through partnerships with local businesses and organizations and strengthening the agri-business sector through incentives, marketing, and networking opportunities. 

The UAP is built on feedback from residents, local agriculture representatives, and interest groups, gathered in fall 2024.
