Urban Agriculture Plan to strengthen Leduc’s food and urban agricultural systems

Tuesday, March 25, 2025

Leduc City Council has approved the City’s Urban Agriculture Plan (UAP), a first-of-its-kind initiative to expand local food production, improve food access, and promote education and community wellbeing.

“As Leduc grows, so does our need for sustainable, local food,” says Bob Young, Mayor of the City of Leduc. “Urban agriculture strengthens our economy, enhances food security, and creates green spaces where people connect. This plan will bring innovative programs to make our city healthier and more resilient.”

Key Focus Areas of the Plan:

  1. Strong Local Food Economy – The plan supports urban agriculture businesses, developing a demonstration farm, and creating a community kitchen for food processing and training.
  2. Food Accessibility and Affordability – Initiatives in the plan include expanding community gardens, introducing edible landscaping in public spaces, and promoting food-sharing initiatives like community fridges.
  3. Community Wellbeing – This involves appointing an urban agriculture “Champion,” hosting events on gardening and food security, and supporting volunteer-led agriculture projects.
  4. Education and Skills Development – The plan recommends launching a volunteer mentorship program, running awareness campaigns, and developing an online learning hub.

The UAP has prioritized action items and progress will be monitored to ensure success.

The Urban Agriculture Plan was initiated as a requirement of the Regional Agriculture Master Plan (RAMP) by the former Edmonton Metropolitan Region Board (EMRB).
