City of Leduc to manage and operate Maclab Centre in 2019
On Jan. 1, 2019, the City of Leduc will assume management and operations of the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts. The centre, a long-standing cultural hub in Leduc, is currently operated by the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts Society through a tri-party agreement with the Black Gold Regional School Division and the City of Leduc.
The transition will build on the current success of the centre to elevate its identity as a regional destination for performing arts. In the coming months, the city will work closely with the school division, society and current centre staff and volunteers to prepare for the transition.
“The Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts is an important piece of Leduc’s cultural identity,” says Leduc Mayor Bob Young. “Through collaboration with the Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts Society and the Black Gold Regional School Division, this transition presents a natural alignment that positions the centre and our arts community for further growth and success.”
“The Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts has seen many changes since its beginnings in the early 80s, but has continually remained a staple of art and culture in Leduc,” says Maclab Centre for the Performing Arts Society president, Gail Johnson. “We look forward to taking these next steps with the city and the school division to highlight the centre and its meaning to the performing arts community.”
“From the beginning, the Maclab Centre has been integral to Leduc Composite High School,” says Leduc Composite High School assistant principal, David Holbrow. “This is an exciting new chapter in the centre’s history, and we are thrilled to be an active part of centre’s ongoing success.”
The transition will not impact the current theatre season, and centre operations will continue as usual. The city will spend the upcoming year working with the society to evaluate operations and determine future performance programs and schedules.
