Treaty 6 Day

The City of Leduc acknowledges Treaty 6 Day (Aug. 23) as an opportunity to reflect on what Treaty means to our community: to learn about historic and modern Treaties in Canada, to understand Treaty relationships and rights, and to recognize that we are all Treaty People. 

All are welcome to join us for the event listed below to highlight the importance of Treaty, Truth and Reconciliation for our city and region.

Treaty 6 Day Wampum Belt Braiding:

• Try your hand at designing and braiding your own belt out of simple beads. This activity is suitable for all ages and skill sets and offers a chance to discuss our responsibilities as Treaty partners.
• Facilitated by Roberta Alook
• Workshop 1: 10 a.m.
• Workshop 2: 12 p.m.
• Location: LRC (foyer outside the curling rink)
• Materials will be provided; drop-in (no registration required)

Note: The workshop is a general opportunity to learn about Indigenous culture and covers general information about Treaties before focusing on the specifics of Treaty 6. Wampum belts were not part of Treaty 6.

Tansi, greetings! My name is Roberta Alook and I am both Woodlands Cree and Dene Sucline from Wabasca, AB and Dillon, SK. I am currently completing a Combined Degree in Native Studies and Education (Secondary) and will be graduating next year in 2025! I major in the Cree Language and minor in Art. Aside from school, I dedicate a lot of my time facilitating and teaching others of all ages about my language, my culture, Canadian and Indigenous history, and my passion for traditional arts and crafts. I am pleased to meet you all and share what I’ve learned about the wampum belt and how fundamental it is to our Numbered Treaties here in Canada. In doing so, participants will acquire an Indigenous logic and framework as well as a memorable keepsake to take home: an easy-to-make wampum belt made of sinew and glass beads.
