Crystal Creek Development Site Servicing

Alberta Infrastructure and Black Gold Regional School Division will be constructing a new high school in Crystal Creek west of the new fire hall at 7101 50 Avenue starting in 2021. The City of Leduc is preparing the site as necessary in advance of construction. This includes: deep sewer installation across 50th Avenue, sanitary and water main construction, site grading, temporary stormwater management facility construction, 50th Avenue road widening, 69th Street urbanization, and emergency vehicle signal installation for the fire hall. The City is also grading and seeding a future football field for the school.

Timeline: Project started August 2020 and expected to be complete spring 2021, ahead of school construction

Project Updates:

Date Status Details
June 30, 2021 Complete (save for a few small items) All underground, concrete and asphalt is done. Landscaping is mostly complete, save for a few touch-ups. Pavement markings will be completed soon. 69th Street is open. 
May 31, 2021 On-time Servicing for the school site is complete. Some remaining road work (e.g. paving and landscaping) on 69th Street and 50th Avenue will be completed over the next couple of months. 
May 6, 2021 On-time Roadwork on 69th Street has started, and is expected to be complete in two weeks. Once the road is complete, landscaping will occur. All work expected to be completed by the end of May. 
November 4, 2020 On-time All underground work is complete. 50th Avenue is fully opened for traffic, including the south turn lane to 69th Street. The asphalt trail along 50th Avenue has been paved and is open to pedestrians. The pedestrian crossing at Hawthorne Way is operational for pedestrian access to Woodbend. Landscaping along 50th Avenue is the final bit of work for 2020, and is expected to be complete this week. The contractor will return in the spring to complete 69th Street south of the firehall. 
October 22, 2020 On-time All underground work is complete. 50th Avenue has been opened for westbound traffic. One eastbound lane has been opened with some remaining concrete work being done at 69th Street over the next week. All lanes, including the turn lane to 69th Street, are anticipated to be open by the end of next week. 
October 14, 2020 On-time Half of the multiway along the south side of 50th Avenue has been gravelled; the remaining half will be constructed once sanitary mains have been installed (sanitary main installation is underway). The directional drill pit is being backfilled and the receiving pit has been restored. The 50th Avenue widening is being paved today, with line painting expected later this week. The new lanes on 50th Avenue are expected to be opened after the weekend. 
October 7, 2020 On-time Grading is complete and topsoil placement is underway. The stormlift station has been reinstalled in its new location. The road base for the 50th Avenue widening has been completed and asphalt is expected to be placed next week. The sanitary directional drill is complete and backfill of the drill and receiving pit will begin this week. The southbound lanes at Hawthorne will be reopened prior to the weekend. 
September 30, 2020 On-time Grading of the site is almost complete. Topsoil is expected to begin being hauled to the site next week. The concrete median on 50th Avenue has been completed and gravel is being placed along the lane widenings to build up the structure of the road. Storm and watermains have been installed. 
September 23, 2020 On-time The directional drill under 50th Avenue is nearing completion. The drill has been slower than expected due to the presence of shale within the drill alignment. Grading of the school site is ongoing. The subgrade of the 50th Avenue widening has been stabilized and gravel is expected to be placed later this week. Concrete median work along 50th Avenue is expected to be completed this week. 
September 16, 2020 On-time The import of clay material has begun to bring the site up to the required elevation. Watermain and stormmain installations are underway, as well as the dismantling of the existing stormlift station that needs to be relocated. Grading and preparation of the subgrade for the 50th Avenue widening is underway.
September 9, 2020 On-time The directional drill under 50th Avenue is underway. The excavation of the receiving pit on Hawthorne Way is ongoing. Grading of the school site is ongoing. The watermain and stormmain installations will begin this week. 
September 2, 2020 On-time The southbound lanes on Hawthorne have been closed to allow for excavation of the directional drill receiving pit. The existing northbound lanes will be shared by north and southbound directions. The sanitary directional drill under 50th Avenue is beginning this week. The excavation of the temporary stormwater surge basin is underway.
August 23, 2020 On-time Stripping of topsoil and stockpiling of marginal materials is ongoing. Excavation of the directional drill pit, south of 50th Avenue is underway. Lane closures along 50th Avenue and Hawthorne Way will begin after the September long weekend.
August 19, 2020 On-time Construction has begun with the stripping and stockpiling of topsoil and marginal materials. 
August 12, 2020 Scheduled Construction contract has been awarded to Sureway Construction Management Ltd. Construction expected to begin this week.
